Are Politics and Rising Fascism Impacting your Mental Health?

  • Are you up all night scrolling your phone for stress inducing political updates every day?
  • Are you so worried that you and your family are no longer safe in the US that it’s hard to focus on your day to day responsibilities?
  • Are political beliefs and moral values fracturing your relationships with your friends or family?

Maybe you once believed our country would provide you with stability and values that would help you reach the life you dreamed of. Or perhaps you are no stranger to the xenophobia, homophobia, and sexism which underlies the foundation of our country. No matter your prior experience as a citizen, it is hard to ignore the constant threats and underlying fear that we are currently living with in the US.

You are doing your part (or as much as you can), but it feels like it will never be enough. You’ve tried to compartmentalize, stay in the moment or remain hopeful but it is getting harder. Maybe you have children and you are exhausted trying to keep the realities of the world away from them. You might be having trouble finding the motivation to continue waking up, going to work, and remaining responsible…but you know you need to do this in order to help your family survive this economy.

You don’t know what the future will bring, but you need to learn how to find some kind of hope so you can get through this for your family and for you.

Since 2016 mental health disorders have greatly increased in our country.

It might feel like the only way to avoid living with anxiety and depression these days is to stop paying attention to what is going on around us.

We’ve seen our neighbors kidnapped, hate crimes increase, human rights stripped. We lived through a global pandemic, the ongoing suffering of our children, threats to our economy, and all while we watch some of our fellow citizens let go of basic empathy and morals.

And that might be the hardest part. We can get through traumatic events without lasting mental health problems–but what truly destabilizes us is the feeling of isolation, the feeling that no one cares.

And we’ve watched this administration instill these feelings into us while we just try to survive.

We need each other more than ever, but we’re also more isolated than ever.

Families are living further apart from each other, and even when our loved ones are reachable we may no longer feel like we can turn to them because they hold different political values and morals than us.

Social media pretends to connect us, but actually works to increase our anxiety and depression.

The economy is making work increasingly stressful and work friendships may not feel safe when you’re unsure if you’ll be on the lay-off chopping block in the future.

political trauma anxiety therapy

Our therapists can help you cope with political trauma & stress–so you can find hope & connection.

We can’t solve fascism or waive a magic wand. We can’t convince your loved ones to see things your way. We wish we could take this pain away.

Therapy for political trauma and anxiety doesn’t change the events we’re living through or try to convince us to “just think positively.”

But here’s what it can do:

  • Help you grieve and find less pain your relationships with loved ones who have let you down by their beliefs
  • Instill internal beliefs that you can survive while finding hope and joy in life moments
  • Provide cathartic release that can decrease feelings of depression & anxiety.
  • Find increased motivation and self confidence to participate in activities that help you feel less powerless
  • Build skills to help you find community and connection with others

Research shows we can’t live through traumatic events alone–we need connection to soothe our brains and nervous systems. Love Heal Grow’s trauma-informed therapists are here to support you.

Hope isn’t lost-therapy can help you find it again.

Human beings have lived through political trauma and life threatening events since the dawn of time. Hope is what gets them through.

Existential therapy helps us look for meaning, connection, and hope even if it’s in small moments. This feeds our souls and helps us keep on living so we can rebuild the world we want.

What To Expect In Political Trauma & Anxiety Therapy

Therapy is one of the only places where you can open up about the impact of the last decade in a completely unedited way. Hate your grandparents now? That’s okay! Wish your fellow liberals could get it together and stop the madness? We get it. Contemplating moving abroad, but weighing whether it will be harder to raise your children as immigrants in a foreign country or in the US with our current political warfare? We will give you place to explore these concerns.

Therapy sessions won’t just provide you space to vent and explore these experiences and feelings, you’ll also:

  • Have support from an expert trauma & anxiety therapist who can teach you skills to survive trauma emotionally
  • Set boundaries in your life that will help decrease your likelihood of being triggered into fight or flight
  • Experience existential therapy that explores themes of grief, loss, hope and life meaning (yes, this sounds deep–it’s also the most important part).

You might come to therapy alone or with your partner or loved one. If you come with another person, we’ll help you find ways to get through this time together even when you don’t agree on every detail. If you come alone, we’ll also be working to help you reconnect with people in your community because we know the most effective way to survive this time is through relationships with others.

Therapy is Political. We wish all therapists understood this.

Over 75% of Love Heal Grow clients are checking in regularly with their therapists about how their mental health is being impacted by current politics and threats even when they are coming to therapy for an unrelated reason. We are a safe place.

Diversity and inclusion are core values of our practice. We believe naming and understanding the impact of systemic injustice has always been a part of our job as trauma and relationship therapists.

Exploring the impact of our political climate is absolutely a necessary part of therapy. Even if you are coming to therapy for different reasons, please don’t feel scared to bring these topics up in therapy. And if you can’t safely explore these topics in therapy, find a new therapist.

But Maybe You’re Not Sure If Political Trauma & Anxiety Therapy Is Right For You…

Can I come to therapy with loved one who doesn't agree with me politically?

Yes. Conflict in a relationship can feel especially hard when they topic we are fighting about is a threat to our or our neighbor’s safety.

Love Heal Grow therapists don’t aim to change anyone’s minds, but we do try to increase empathy in a relationship. Sometimes when people don’t understand us, it’s because their own fear or trauma is in the way. Couples or family therapy in these instances can help us bring down our defenses so we can increase empathy for each other’s perspectives. We also can increase our connection over shared values.

Sometimes, though boundaries are needed and we may decide to break up or go no-contact with someone who we believe is harming us with their viewpoint. And that is okay too. Individual therapy can help you grieve this loss, forgive yourself for needing these boundaries, and explore what (if any) relationship you want to have with this person.

Can I ask my therapist who they voted for?

Yes. In times like these, we believe it is important and maybe necessary for therapists to be transparent with their values in order for their clients to feel safe.

Are my political beliefs, immigration status, or other vulnerabilities noted in my medical record?

No. All of your medical notes are protected by HIPAA law and kept private. Since we don’t accept insurance, we also don’t need to share your records with a third party. Even so, we train all of our therapists to keep vulnerable information such as your political beliefs, immigration status, gender identity, sexuality details out of your medical chart notes so that you are extra protected.

You can create a life worth living even when the world is scary

We truly believe this. Why? Because we are also humans going through these horrific events, but finding ways to connect, build community, and find moments of joy. We will not give away our autonomy without a fight.
