What Is Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy?
Throughout life, different aspects, or “parts,” of our personality develop to adapt to the needs of the moment. For instance, when we become parents, our nurturing side naturally guides us, and when we face a crisis, our courageous protector instinctively steps in to manage the challenge. Each part has a job to do to safeguard us from adverse outcomes and benefit the overall “system.”
However, when these parts find themselves in extreme circumstances, often due to trauma or internal conflict, they can inadvertently hinder rather than help our overall well-being. When the system isn’t in balance, we often struggle with self-criticism, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, and cycles of blame and disconnection in relationships.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic approach that explores how our various inner parts interact, all directed towards nurturing our authentic “Self,” which embodies wisdom and intuitive knowing. By fostering trust between the authentic Self and our different parts, we can harmonize these inner voices, ultimately restoring balance to our emotional landscape.
IFS, also known as parts work, is an evidence-based therapy with proven efficacy. In 2021, a meta-analysis concluded that it effectively reduces symptoms of depression, anxiety, and trauma-related disorders. Additionally, IFS was found to be more effective than traditional talk therapy in reducing symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
How IFS Therapy Works
Who Can Benefit From IFS Counseling?
IFS therapy can help individuals manage anxiety and depression, heal emotional wounds, and explore alternatives to unhealthy coping strategies, such as addiction. In particular, IFS psychotherapy can help clients navigate their often-complicated relationships with loved ones—such as partners and family members—and can be an effective tool for working through the betrayal and repair process.
Because it incorporates elements of mindfulness, Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), somatic therapy, attachment theory, memory reprocessing, trauma healing, and emotion regulation, IFS is highly versatile. In our experience IFS is helpful for all people experiencing anxiety or trauma, and clients who may feel othered or marginalized, such as persons of color, LGBTQIA+-identifying, or neuroexpansive, have especially resonated with this modality.
While traditional forms of talk therapy can be beneficial in terms of learning, true healing requires engaging deeper regions of the brain. Instead of pushing away parts of Self that seem too painful or challenging to confront, IFS therapy fosters curiosity and compassion to examine them. In parts work therapy, clients are gently guided to release whatever pain they may be holding onto, allowing them to embrace more of who they truly are in their lives and through relationships.
