Is ADHD impacting your life, relationships and self esteem?

  • Do you feel misunderstood by your loved ones who seem always upset with you?
  • Are you overwhelmed with tasks and to-dos that it seems like other people conquer easily?
  • Deep inside are you worried you are lazy, stupid, or just bad at life?

ADHD brains are good at many things, but our ADHD brains also can lead to a life where others misunderstand us or think we are purposely letting them down. We are capable of deep fixation on important projects and inspiring creativity, but daily tasks like laundry, making meals, paperwork, or house cleaning can sometimes feel impossible.

We may have received messages as children that we weren’t good at school or that we were disobedient. Our emotions may have been seen by others are negative or disruptive which led adults to shame or punish us. It hurt so much to look into our parents eyes and see their disappointment.

Now as an adult, you might feel stuck in these same patterns. But it’s your partner or children who you feel you are disappointing. When you try to explain yourself to them, they just get more and more upset with you. Will you ever be enough?

People think you “don’t care” but they don’t see just how much you truly do.

Your mind is always racing with ideas and ways to do more. You want nothing more than to prove yourself to your loved ones. You might get distracted so your ideas don’t come to fruition, or perhaps you always seem to run out of time.

Before you know it, you’re faced with a hurt loved one again wondering how you could let them down again. When you try to explain all that you wanted to do, they see this as excuses or tell you you’re getting defensive.

You might get frustrated or angry with them that they don’t understand, or maybe you end up shutting down because you don’t want to hurt them anymore than you already have. “You just don’t care!” they say.

It seems like you can’t get through to them. You do care, you care so much. “Why do I keep f-ing this up?” you think.

Non-ADHD partners are taught by society to see normal ADHD challenges as evidence of a bad relationship.

We all receive messages that “good partners” do what they say they will do, stay present with empathy in conversations with their partner, and contribute equally to home responsibilities and childcare.

ADHD folks can love their partner and trying their hardest in a relationship and still struggle with the above relationship needs. And it’s not their fault.

Distractibility, time blindness, sensory needs, executive functioning challenges, and emotional regulation difficulties are common experiences of people with ADHD. All of these symptoms can make trust-building in relationships more difficult.

Non-ADHD partners might feel like they are on a rollercoaster because they are interpreting their ADHD partner’s actions as a lack of commitment to the relationship. Social media, friends, and even their own therapist may be reinforcing a belief that their ADHD partner is not a good enough partner.

Everyone is missing that ADHD symptoms need different support. “Try harder” isn’t good enough advice.

Our therapists can give you (and your loved ones) relief.

You may have read self help books or tried therapy before.

You still struggle with:

  • High conflict in your relationship(s)
  • Feeling like you’re always “in trouble”
  • A racing mind on the inside while others see you as “doing nothing”
  • Being seen as the “bad guy” in your relationship
  • Depression, anxiety or feeling bad about yourself

Traditional therapy for individual or couples does not impart the right skills that will help you succeed. You need a ADHD-affirming therapist who can help you finally find relief.

You are good enough and lovable.

ADHD folks are hugely loving and have big hearts. We are creatives, scientists, teachers, nurturers and maybe even therapists ourselves.

We are often misunderstood and judged. This can lead us to to turn on ourselves inside or we may shut down and withdraw from life.

It doesn’t need to be this way–therapy can help you feel better again.

What To Expect In ADHD Therapy

You can come to therapy by yourself or with a partner or loved one. We can assess you for ADHD if you don’t have a previous diagnosis, provide education that helps you and your loved ones understand your symptoms, and give you tools to find new ways to feel better in your life and relationship.

Your ADHD therapist will:

  • Assess you for ADHD if you need a diagnosis
  • Help you and your loved ones understand your challenges and how they aren’t your fault
  • Teach new ways to communicate that help you feel more relaxed and connected
  • Provide skills that help ADHD folks succeed in their life and relationships
  • Help you improve your self esteem so you no longer get stuck frozen in shame and despair

Research shows that unsupported ADHD folks are more likely to live with anxiety & depression–it doesn’t need to be this way. Love Heal Grow ADHD therapists can help you create the life & relationships you want.

Therapists should not just be ADHD-knowledgeable, but ADHD-Affirming

Traditional therapy is not helpful for ADHD folks because most therapists see ADHD as a medical diagnosis that needs to be managed instead of a whole person with unique strengths and experiences.

There is often an under-lying judgement in the therapy room when ADHD folks seek therapy for themselves or with a partner. Too often, they are the “identified patient” and are told to change in order to fit into the world around them and meet their loved ones needs.

ADHD folks need better than this. They need empathy from others and skills that help them thrive, not just survive. We are proud to be ADHD-affirming at Love Heal Grow.

I've felt misunderstood by therapists in the past, how will I know it will be different this time?

We’re sorry that happened to you! Therapists are much less likely to misunderstand an ADHD person if they are ADHD/neurodivergent themselves or if they have special education in a neurodivergent inclusive environment. Many of our therapists identify as neurodivergent and we all receive this education. We believe you’ll be safe with us.

Can I come alone first and bring a partner later?

Yes. Sometimes even though we are having relationship challenges, we aren’t ready to dive right into couples therapy. That’s okay! At Love Heal Grow, you can start either alone or together. If you decide you want help in couples therapy in the future, just let your therapist know and you can either bring your partner into future sessions or they can connect you to another Love Heal Grow ADHD-affirming therapist.

I'm not sure if I have ADHD. Do you provide assessments?

Yes. Some of our therapists provide formal or informal diagnostic assessments for ADHD. Please email hello@lovehealgrow.com to be connected to receive more information if you are interested.

You are a good person

You’ve been misunderstood your whole life. The messages you received from others have been internalized making it hard to believe in yourself. You might feel lazy, stupid or bad–and this simply isn’t true. ADHD just needs proper support and we’re here to help you find it.
