When our partner is talking to us about something important, we have our own reactions going on inside (thoughts, opinions, feelings and advice).  If we want our partner to feel supported when they are opening up, we can put our own stuff on hold in order to focus on listening to what they are sharing.  We can always come back to our own feelings and opinions later, but we want to prioritize listening and focusing on our partner’s thoughts and feelings when they are opening up.
