What is Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT)?
Developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) is a structured approach to couples therapy which focuses on what we know about adult attachment and how couples bond.
Emotionally focused couples therapy aims to help couples:
- Expand and re-organize key emotional responses,
- Create a shift in partner’s interactional positions and begin new cycles of interaction,
- And to foster the creation of a secure bond between the partners.
In my experience, EFT has been especially helpful for couples who have attempted to make change in the relationship by learning new skills, but still find themselves stuck and feeling distance in the relationship.
EFT supports us in slowing the conflict down and allowing each partner to explore their internal emotional reaction and find new ways for each partner to understand and support the other.
EFT has been rigorously researched and has a high success rate based on couples’ reports.
As a relationship therapist in Sacramento,
I have participated in intensive advanced trainings in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and I blend this approach with Gottman Method Couples Therapy, depending on your needs and to give your relationship the best chance of success.
